Ussa LGA Reaffirms Peace Accord, Reconstitutes Committee to Strengthen Security

The Ussa Local Government Council has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and harmonious coexistence following a strategic meeting with stakeholders to address security concerns in the area.

The meeting, convened by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Chief Abershi Musa, brought together members of the Peace and Surveillance Committee to deliberate on issues surrounding the Kuteb and Fulani communities in Ussa Local Government Area.

Central to the discussions was the reaffirmation of an existing peace accord which stipulates that visiting Fulani herders are to vacate the area at the onset of the rainy season, typically in early April, to allow farming activities by indigenous Kuteb people, resident Fulani, and other farmers.

Under the agreement, the herders are expected to return after the harvest period, around late December.

As part of renewed efforts to ensure compliance and strengthen monitoring, the council announced the dissolution of the previous Peace and Surveillance Committee and the constitution of a new, balanced committee.

The newly inaugurated body comprises 20 members, including 10 representatives from the Fulani community and 10 from the Kuteb community, drawn equally from Kpambo and Lissam Chiefdoms.

The committee is expected to work closely with security agencies to oversee farming and grazing activities and ensure adherence to the peace agreement.

Although the Executive Chairman was unavoidably absent, he was represented at the meeting by the Executive Vice Chairman, Rimamnungra Maigida, who reiterated the council’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the area.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), called on the Ardo of Ussa to identify visiting herders and ensure strict compliance with the agreement.

He stressed that any defaulters should be reported to security agencies and urged both Fulani and Kuteb leaders to expose criminal elements within their communities.

In his remarks, R.Y. Shamaki emphasized that peace remains the foundation for development, urging all parties to respect the agreement and avoid shielding individuals involved in criminal activities.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to uphold peace, justice, and cooperation as essential pillars for sustainable development in Ussa Local Government Area.
