Nwonyo Fishing Festival To Hold April 17–18 In Ibi

The annual Nwonyo Traditional Fishing Festival will hold from April 17 to April 18, 2026, in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State, with stakeholders expressing optimism for a bigger and more culturally enriching outing.

The Paramount Ruler of the Jukun Kingdom, His Majesty Dr. Manu Ishaku Adda Ali, who also chairs the festival's organising committee, commended Governor Agbu Kefas for sustaining and promoting the event. He noted that the government's commitment has helped reposition the festival as a major cultural and economic asset for the state.

The royal father said the revival and modernization of the festival have opened it up to wider participation, attracting visitors from across Nigeria and beyond. According to him, the event serves not only as a platform for traditional fishing but also as a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the Jukun people and other ethnic groups in Taraba.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Heritage and Ecotourism, Dr. Joseph Titus Nagombe, described the festival as one of the most significant cultural events in the state, with growing national and international recognition. He explained that the ministry is coordinating preparations to ensure a successful outing.

Nagombe assured visitors of adequate security, attributing the peaceful atmosphere in the state to the efforts of the current administration.

In his remarks, the Gara of Donga, HRH Sanvala Varzoa Shimbura, disclosed that cultural troupes from across the state are already preparing to participate, adding that the festival will feature traditional dances, local cuisines, and other cultural displays.

Similarly, the First Class Chief of Takum, HRH Barrister Sopiya Ahmadu Gboshi III, said this year's edition would go beyond fishing activities, with expanded cultural exhibitions designed to showcase Taraba's diverse heritage and attract more tourists.

The Nwonyo Fishing Festival, which has a history spanning over a century, is regarded as one of Nigeria's prominent traditional events. Revived by the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas after years of inactivity, it continues to draw tourists, cultural enthusiasts, and participants from within and outside the country.
