Livestock Ministry to Establish Academy in Taraba

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has concluded plans to establish a Livestock Academy in Taraba State as part of efforts to boost dairy production, build human capacity, and strengthen the livestock value chain in Nigeria.

This was disclosed on Monday, April 10, 2026, when the Minister of Livestock Development, Dr. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, paid a working visit to Governor Agbu Kefas at the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo.

The minister, who was accompanied by a high-powered delegation, including representatives of Pure Dairy Herd, said the visit was part of ongoing consultations with the Taraba State Government toward the take-off of the proposed academy.

Maiha explained that the academy is expected to serve as a centre for training, research, and innovation in modern livestock and dairy production, adding that it would provide technical skills for farmers, herders, and agribusiness investors across the country.

According to him, Taraba was selected for the project due to its vast livestock population, expansive grazing reserves, and fertile land suitable for large-scale dairy production.

He described the state as peaceful and investment-friendly, commending Governor Kefas for his administration’s commitment to security and agricultural development.

“The establishment of this academy will not only enhance dairy production but also create jobs, improve value addition, and reduce dependence on imported dairy products,” the minister said.

In his remarks, Governor Kefas expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for considering Taraba for the initiative, noting that the project aligns with his administration’s focus on agriculture, economic diversification, and job creation.

He reiterated the readiness of the state government to provide the necessary support, including land, infrastructure, and security, to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

Kefas also emphasized the importance of partnerships with both local and international investors, stating that Taraba remains open to collaborations that will drive economic growth and improve livelihoods.

As part of the visit, a dairy production expert, Gavel Don, delivered a technical presentation highlighting practical strategies to scale up dairy production, including improved breeding systems, feed development, and modern processing techniques.

He noted that with proper investment and coordination, Taraba has the potential to become a leading hub for dairy production in West Africa.

Stakeholders at the meeting said the proposed academy is expected to attract investors, enhance capacity building, and position Taraba as a key player in Nigeria’s livestock transformation agenda.
