Why I Returned To PDP — Senator Joel Ikenya

Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya has formally announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the move as a necessary step to realign with his political values and commitment to the people of Taraba State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the former minister and prominent Taraba politician said his decision followed deep reflection and dissatisfaction with the current direction of the APC, both within the state and nationally.

Sen. Ikenya explained that his values and vision for development no longer aligned with the APC's leadership style, noting that his contributions were not accorded the seriousness required in major decision-making processes.

"This decision was not taken lightly," he said. "However, over time, it has become clear that my personal political values, vision for development, and commitment to the welfare of our people are no longer aligned with the direction of the APC. I find it increasingly difficult to function effectively within a party where my views and contributions are neither fully supported nor genuinely considered."

He also expressed concern over recent political developments in Taraba State, especially ongoing realignments, which he believes could threaten transparent and accountable governance.

"I strongly believe that leadership must be built on competence, accountability, transparency, and genuine service to the people," he noted. "Unfortunately, I cannot in good conscience lend my support to political decisions or alliances that do not reflect these core principles."

Sen. Ikenya emphasized that his loyalty remains with the people of Taraba State, stressing that he refuses to sacrifice his integrity and commitment to good governance for political convenience.

According to him, returning to the PDP offers an opportunity to reconnect with the platform that shaped his political career and to work with individuals who share his vision for a progressive Taraba.

"As I return to the PDP, I do so with renewed commitment to the ideals of democracy, development, and people-oriented leadership," he said. "I look forward to continuing to work with like-minded individuals who genuinely believe in building a better Taraba State."

He thanked his supporters, stakeholders, and citizens of the state for their understanding and sustained support throughout his political journey.
