Taraba Government Moves to Revive School Sports, Extracurricular Activities
The Taraba State Government has announced plans to revive school sports and other extracurricular activities in nursery and primary schools as part of efforts to improve school enrolment, promote unity and enhance pupils' overall development.
The Commissioner for Nursery and Primary Education, Hajiya Fatima T. Habeeb, disclosed this while receiving sports coordinators from the 16 local government areas of the state during a strategic meeting on the revival of sporting activities in basic schools.
Habeeb said the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas was committed to revitalising school sports as an important component of basic education, expressing concern over the decline of sporting activities in schools.
She stressed that restoring school sports would help attract more children to school, encourage active participation in extracurricular activities and provide pupils with opportunities to discover and develop their talents.
According to the commissioner, engaging pupils in sporting activities would also help keep them productively occupied and discourage negative influences, including drug abuse and cultism.
She explained that the meeting with sports coordinators from the 16 local government areas was convened to develop practical strategies for using sports to promote peace, unity and peaceful coexistence among residents of Taraba State.
The commissioner noted that sports go beyond physical exercise and competition, describing them as an effective tool for teaching children discipline, teamwork, mutual understanding and respect for people from different backgrounds.
She added that strengthening school sports would contribute to the physical, social and moral development of pupils while complementing their academic activities.
Habeeb reaffirmed the Kefas administration's commitment to building an inclusive educational system that supports the academic and overall development of every child in the state.
The meeting ended with a call for greater collaboration among sports coordinators and other relevant stakeholders to develop effective strategies for restoring sporting activities and integrating them into basic education across Taraba.
The initiative forms part of the state government's broader efforts to improve the quality of education, promote youth development and create opportunities for children to develop their abilities beyond the classroom.
