2027: Mumuye Community Moves to Reclaim Political Prominence

 

The Mumuye Cultural Development Association (MCDA) has convened a political consultative meeting aimed at strengthening unity among the Mumuye people and repositioning the ethnic group for greater political relevance.

 

The meeting, held at the Mumuye House in Mile Six, Jalingo, brought together community leaders, traditional rulers and representatives from various local government areas of the state.

 

In his welcome address, the National President of the association, Anthony Dogo Vowaty (ASP rtd), said the gathering was designed to unite the Mumuye people who share a common history, culture and collective destiny.

 

He expressed concern that over the past two decades the once strong and respected political voice of the Mumuye community had gradually weakened, noting that the consultative forum was a step toward rebuilding unity and restoring the community's influence through peaceful engagement and cooperation.

 

Representing the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Francis Tokolo said the Mumuye people had at times been politically sidelined. He, however, noted that under the leadership of Agbu Kefas, members of the Mumuyecommunity now occupy key positions in the state, including the Deputy Governor and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

 

He urged the community to remain united and organised, adding that their collective strength would enable them to effectively negotiate and participate in future political processes.

 

Also speaking, the Chairperson of Yorro Local Government Area, Martina Anthony, expressed optimism that renewed unity among the Mumuyepeople would help restore their lost political prominence. She emphasised that unity remains the backbone of every successful society.

 

The Women Leader of the association, MaimunaSalihu Yantu, called for greater inclusion of Mumuyepeople in national political appointments and urged leaders to consider women when making political decisions and appointments.

 

The consultative meeting was attended by YawiTitus, traditional rulers and representatives of Mumuye communities from eight local government areas: ArdoKola Local Government Area, Bali Local Government Area, Gashaka Local Government Area, Gassol Local Government Area, Jalingo Local Government Area, Lau Local Government Area, Yorro Local Government Area and Zing Local Government Area.
