Taraba to Benefit from U.S.-Backed Agro-Forestry Programme for Rural Farmers

The Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas has received a delegation from Agro-Forestry Impact and Regeneration (AFIR), a United States–based organisation, on a courtesy visit at the Executive Council Chamber, TY Danjuma House, Jalingo.

The delegation, led by AFIR President and Founder, Ms. Diana Dopheny, is in the state to introduce a modern agro-forestry initiative targeting cocoa farmers in Kurmi Local Government Area. The programme aims to boost productivity, improve soil health, and promote long-term agricultural sustainability.

Governor Kefas was represented at the meeting by the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. John KizitoBonzena.

In her remarks, Ms. Dopheny said the AFIR intervention is designed to provide farmers with modern tools, regenerative practices and experiential learning opportunities that will help increase yields and reduce pest and disease pressures. According to her, the project will improve food safety, raise farmer incomes and strengthen regional food security.

Also speaking, a team member, Mr. Michael Meyer, and AFIR's African Technical Director, Mr. Francis Bosah, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to delivering holistic, science-based solutions that improve the livelihoods of rural farmers. They explained that AFIR's blended funding model and project design integrate global innovations with the strengths and local knowledge of indigenous farmers.

Responding on behalf of the Governor, Rt. Hon. Bonzenathanked AFIR for selecting Taraba State for the initiative, assuring the team of full government support and a peaceful, enabling environment for the project's implementation.

The visit ended with the presentation of cartons of Taraba's premium tea and traditional attire to the guests, followed by a group photograph with government officials.
