APC Candidates Raise Alarm Over N1m Tax Clearance Fee in Taraba
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State has raised concerns over what it described as deliberate attempts by the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC) to frustrate opposition participation ahead of the November local government elections.
Speaking with journalists in Jalingo, a chairmanship aspirant in Yorro Local Government Area, IshayaKunzang, decried the N1 million tax clearance fee imposed on candidates, describing it as exorbitant. He appealed to TSIEC to review the cost downward to at most N300,000 in order to ensure inclusiveness and fairness in the electoral process.
In a separate statement issued on Sunday, the state chairman of the APC, El-Sudi Ibrahim Tukura, accused TSIEC of deliberately creating hurdles that would favour the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to him, the tax clearance fee, which was pegged at N100,000 in previous elections and N150,000 in the last cycle, has now been arbitrarily increased to N1 million.
