Students and other occupants of the Muhammadu Buhari Housing Estate at ATC, Jalingo, have been left stranded following the formal handover of the estate to the 10 Division of the Nigerian Army.

The Taraba State Government directed all occupants to vacate the estate immediately after handing over the entire facility to the military.

The Secretary to the Taraba State Government, Gebon Kataps, announced the decision, stating that the estate had been formally handed over to the 10 Division of the Nigerian Army.

The order, directed the occupants to vacate the premises on or before Monday, August 17, leaving many affected persons, particularly students, struggling to secure alternative accommodation.

According to a statement by Investors Kakwe, many of the occupants were students who were forced to leave without knowing where they would stay.

The group expressed concern over the welfare and safety of displaced students, particularly female students, who may become vulnerable while searching for accommodation.

“We are calling on the state government to please look into this matter as an emergency and provide aid to the affected persons,” the statement said.

The group also appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas to consider building affordable houses or an estate for students to reduce the growing cost of accommodation in the ATC area.

According to the group, although the state government had reduced tuition fees, the rising cost of rent continued to place a heavy burden on students.

The group further called on the Taraba State House of Assembly to consider measures that would address what it described as excessive increases in house rent by landlords and landladies in the ATC area.
