2027: Can Danji SS Turn Popular Support Into Political Power?

Former two-term member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Danjuma Usman Shiddi, popularly known as Danji SS, has once again emerged at the center of political discussions in Taraba State following his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former federal lawmaker, who represented Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency in the 8th and 9th National Assembly, announced his departure from the APC last month, citing dissatisfaction with the party's internal crisis, lack of inclusivity, and deviation from its founding ideals.

Danji SS joined the APC in the build-up to the 2023 general elections after winning two previous elections under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He sought the APC senatorial ticket for Taraba South but was eventually sidelined following a prolonged legal tussle that culminated in the Supreme Court affirming Mr. David Jimkuta as the validly nominated candidate of the party.

Although the APC went on to win the seat, many within the Southern Zone attributed the party's electoral strength to the popularity and grassroots mobilization efforts of Danji SS. His inability to contest the senatorial election was widely regarded as a missed opportunity for the party and a personal setback for the former lawmaker.

Growing Support Base Despite Electoral Loss

Since the end of the 2023 elections, Danji SS has remained politically active, engaging with constituents across the five local government areas of the senatorial district. He has maintained visibility during major cultural and religious events, and continues to interface with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth groups.

Despite being out of office, he has sustained a philanthropic presence in the zone, offering assistance to widows, students, and farmers, and supporting community development initiatives. This sustained engagement has earned him the nickname "unofficial senator" among supporters and observers.

Political analysts note that while he is no longer in public office, Danji SS has retained significant political relevance, particularly among the youth who see him as more approachable and relatable compared to other political figures in the zone.

APC Crisis and Exit Fallout

His departure from the APC has exposed lingering cracks within the party in Taraba State. Several prominent figures, including founding members and local stakeholders, have since followed suit, citing similar frustrations with the leadership and structure of the party.

In a resignation letter obtained by this newspaper, Mr. A.D. Kitan Jenuwa, a founding member of the APC and longtime political associate of Danji SS, decried the internal factionalism and lack of progress within the party. He specifically referenced the exit of Danji SS as a tipping point for many disillusioned members.

There is mounting speculation that the former lawmaker may be heading to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), although no official announcement has been made. Regardless of his next political destination, observers agree that his influence is likely to shape the political landscape of Southern Taraba in the coming years.

Options for 2027

As the 2027 elections approach, Hon. Shiddi is expected to be a major contender, whether for the senatorial seat or a return to the House of Representatives. While many of his supporters have encouraged him to reclaim his old Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency seat, others insist he should again contest the Senate.

"Danji SS is our party," said one supporter in Takum. "He has won elections under APGA, and helped build the APC from the grassroots. Wherever he goes, we follow."

Another supporter suggested that if he moves to the ADC or any other platform, his candidacy could pose a serious challenge to the incumbent senator, David Jimkuta, who is perceived in some quarters as distant and disconnected from the grassroots.

For now, Hon. Danjuma Usman Shiddi remains politically unaffiliated, but his political base appears to be intact. With his wide support across ethnic and religious divides, continued visibility, and strong grassroots network, many believe that his political comeback is only a matter of time.

As Taraba South gears up for a new political season, the former lawmaker is expected to play a key role in shaping the direction of the region's politics. Whether he returns under a new platform or forms a coalition of like-minded allies, one thing remains certain—Danji SS remains a force to be reckoned with ahead of 2027.
