NEDC To Rehabilitate 300 Households Displaced By Windstorm In Garba Chede Community

 

 

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) on Thursday said it would rehabilitate over 300 households displaced by windstorm in Garba Chede community of Bali local government area in Taraba State.

 

Hajia Batulu Isa, Deputy Director, Relief and Mediation made the remark after the Assessment Visit by officials of the Commission to Garba Chede community in the state.

 

Isa assured the victims that the commission would do everything within iti reach to bring succour to victims of the windstorm as quick as possible.

 

She said that the delegation by the commission was to visit the scene and report back to the it accordingly.

 

She noted that the victims were in serious need of food items, non food items and building materials, which would cushion the effect of the hardship occasioned by the natural disaster.

 

" We have being delegated by the North East Development Commission to visit this community and assess the level of damage caused by the windstorm in this community.

 

"We have taken our data already, we have seeing the damages caused by windstorm and we shall report back to the Commission for onward action.

 

"I want to assure you that the commission will respond as quick as possible by providing food items, non food items and building materials to the victims.

 

"Since the leadership of the commission led by Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, Managing Director and CEO is very worried about this sad situation.

 

 

 

" This visit will visit is to determine the provision of succour to the displaced," Isa said.

 

Mr Hashimu Abdulkadir, one of the village heads from the affected communities told newsmen that six people lost their lives during the windstorm incidents.

 

Abdulkadir, who said that 30 people were in hospitals also said that three Mosques, one Church, one school and one hospital were among the affected structures.

 

While commending the NEDC for its response, he appealed to other spirited bodies and individuals to support the victims of the disaster.

 

He however, expressed disappointment with the Taraba government, the member representing Bali 1 in the state Assembly, Mrs Veronica Alhassan for non intervention during their humanitarian needs.

 

The village head called on the Taraba government and Alhaji Jafaru Yakubu, member representing Bali Gassol federal constituency to come to their aid.

 

One of the victims who spoke to newsmen, Mrs Zubaida Umar, said she had six children who almost lost their lives due to the windstorm.

 

Umar said that life has been difficult especially that most residents were affected directly or indirectly.

 

She called on governments at all levels to provide livelihood support to the victims.

 

During the visit by the NEDC, some displaced persons were still living without shelter. (NAN)
