Ibi Lawyers Protest As Police Constables Beat Magistrate To Stupor

Ibi Lawyers Forum has strongly condemned the attack by six police constables attached to the Ibi Police Division on the Presiding Judge of an Area Court in Wukari, Taraba State Magistrate Abdulrahman Ridwan Esq.

In a statement signed by the publicity secretary of the Forum  Barr Ibrahim Faransa, "the perpetrators were said to have gone for an illegal assignment within the vicinity of Magistrate Adulrahman, which led to him rebuking them.

"The constables viciously descended on the Area Court Judge till he was knocked off and evacuated to the First Refferals Hospital, Ibi, where he is still under medical care."

The Forum further stated that the act of the erring Police Constables is contrary to the provisions of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under Section 34. (1) Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly -(a) no person shall be subject to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment.

The forum reestablished that the magistrate was not a suspect but the incident occurred while the Magistrate was discharging his legal function provided by relevant provisions of Police Act 2020 and also Taraba State Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2021.

The Forum therefore called on relevant authorities to take serious action against the perpetrators or else legal measures will be employed to seek redress as provided by the constitution of Nigeria.
