Beyond Uncompleted Buildings….


 

 



 

Yes, the fence and the outer look of the Taraba State College of Nursing and Midwifery Jalingo might not be attractive but graduates  of the college are however making waves in their chosen career.   

 

One of such is Sakina Umar Sa'id who graduated from the College of Nursing and Midwifery in 2021 and volunteered to work for free at General Hospital, Ganye, Adamawa State the community where she hails from.

 

Miss Sa'id  after graduation and securing the certificate and license of practice now  manages many patients a day, with those on admission sometimes reaching up to 30 patients in the medical and surgical Female Wards of the General Hospital, Ganye.

 

She said she discovered that because of lack of, she was then enlisted to be running shifts, which she wasn't doing initially.

 

Top management staff of the College said the school had undergone an academic upgrade under the Governor Ishaku's led administration.

 

"The college has produced more licensed nurse under the current administration and this is addressing the lack of manpower in the north east area, where nurses and midwives retire or secure transfers to other parts of the country."

 

 

The top management staff said Governor Ishaku decided to invest in the academic fortune of the institution to produce quality medical personnel for the state.

 

"The institution is witness another level of growth, this time focusing on producing quality healthcare personnel,  there are a lot of factors that determine growth in an organization, its beyond having buildings – the output of the organization is a key factor, today we have our nurses filling the gaps in many health facilities in the region."     

 

Provost of the Taraba State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Esther Danjuma Gana, said the present government facilitated full accreditation of courses in the institution and was unfair to dismiss the efforts.

 

While refuting reports alleging that the institution has been abandoned by the state government and left to rot away, Danjuma  exonerated the state governor, Darius Ishaku of the accusations, but admitted that some infrastructures in the institution laying bare had been like that before the present administration.

 

 

According to her, "When I took over in March 2021, we invited the accreditation team again in November and we were given full accreditation for five years, increased courses for us and admission quota from 50 to 100.

 

"We may not have overcome all the challenges, the Governor facilitated the movement of the school to the permanent site and the full accreditation we have gotten now."

 

 

A student who preferred to be anonymous told Truth and Facts reporters that under DDI's administration the schools now runs more sessions a year, with more students being admitted and sitting for the license   examination.

 

The student further said, "before now the school only admits very few students and they don't even write the board exams as at when due, so these are more important to us than few buildings that are yet to be completed. 

 

"If the gate of the school is beautiful but the students are not graduating  or being licensed to practice of what essence is the beautiful structures to the students.'' a student said".

 

A lecturer in the college who did not want his name mentioned said, "The challenges here have been before the present administration, the buildings were left unused, however the major challenges had been our students not getting license to practice, in some cases students wait for three to five years after graduating before writing license examinations"

 

"The current administration has been able to tackle that, our quota for license examination has been increased and more courses have been accredited for the institution".
