Crisis Rocks Taraba Muslim Council
· Court Stops election of new leader
The Muslim Council of Taraba state has been thrown into a leadership crisis, as efforts to elect a new executive for the council has divided its leadership into two groups, Taraba Truth and Facts can exclusively report.
The Council has scheduled its election for today, Saturday but a Federal High Court in Jalingo on Friday granted an exparte injunction stopping the council from holding the election. One Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar has approached the court to stop the conduct of the election based on irregularities in the electoral guideline.
Taraba Truth and Fact gathered that Shiekh Aminu Modibbo and Ustaz Bashir Hamma-Adama are contesting for the chairmanship of the council.
Sources said Shiekh Aminu Modibbo is favored by the state government to emerge Chairmanship of the Council, Ustaz Bashir Hamma-Adama is believe to be have more supporters among members of the Council.
A Muslim leader in the state who requested not to be name said accused the leadership of the Council of fanning the ember of crisis in the council by frustrating efforts to have a credible election.
"Those who have been in the leadership of the Muslims Council are the problem here, they don't want the election to hold because they fear that their candidate Shiekh Aminu Modibbo might not win the Chairmanship. They are also the one who went and paint Ustaz Bashir Hamma-Adama black before Governor Ishaku to enjoy the support of government but the records are there, Hamma-Adama was the first Ulama to publicly declare his support for Governor Ishaku in 2015.
"We were ready for the election and I can tell you Ustaz Bashir Hamma-Adama would have emerge winner but we were told there's an injunction stopping the election. The old guys in the Council don't want Ustaz Bashir Hamma-Adama whom they believe will reform the Council to come into its leadership fold."
Barr. Nana Ganki Hassan counsel to Mohammed Abubakar said the guidelines for the election does not follow constitutional provision of the Muslim Council of Taraba State.
"The guideline for the election, contravenes the position of their own constitution, that's where the problem arose, whatever is stated in the guideline should be in same position with their own constitution. My client Mohammed Abubakar is a financial member of the council who is entitle to vote but seeing the irregularities of the election, he decided to seek legal redress. His interest is seeing the right thing done at the council and not to plunge the Council into crisis.
