Wukari/Ibi 2027: Hon. Ayuba Zaku’s Re-election Bid Under Pressure

 

The chances of Hon. Ayuba Zaku returning to the House of Representatives in 2027 are facing growing uncertainty as dissatisfaction builds across Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency.

 

Zaku, who was elected in 2023 under the APC, came into office with strong credentials as a former Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Taraba State Government. Many believed his experience would translate into effective representation and bring development to the constituency.

 

However, nearly three years into his tenure, concerns are rising over his performance.

 

Residents and political stakeholders in both Wukari and Ibi say there are few visible federal projects and limited access to opportunities, especially in Wukari. Many say the expectations that greeted his election have not been met.

 

The situation became more pronounced after the Jukun community openly accused the lawmaker of marginalization. In a letter written by community leader, Thomas Apakeh, the group alleged that they have been excluded from decision-making despite their support during the election.

 

"We feel that you have taken sides and favored your fellow brothers without involving our community in your decision-making process," the letter stated.

 

The group added that their demand is for fairness, not special treatment.

 

"We are not asking for special treatment but rather equal treatment and recognition," Apakeh said.

 

Beyond this, fresh complaints have also emerged from other parts of the constituency. A stakeholder, Zaid Haritu, questioned the lawmaker's engagement with constituents, alleging a lack of responsiveness to key concerns.

 

"Hon. Zaku is not listening to our people on our main objectives," he said. "Since the beginning of this journey we have been calling his attention, but he refused to answer us. Now that the campaign period is approaching, you will begin to see many forms of dialogue."

 

Haritu also alleged that some ongoing constituency projects are politically motivated.

 

"This classroom project going on now is because he wants to recontest," he claimed.

 

He further accused the lawmaker of distancing himself from some communities.

 

"He has totally distanced himself from Jibucommunity so that he will not listen to their problems or be asked for solutions," he added.

 

Concerns have also been raised over the distribution of recent Ramadan support. Reports indicate that financial assistance was channelled mainly to the Muslim Council Women's Wing in Sarkin Kudu District of Ibi Local Government Area through the lawmaker's local government coordinator.

 

The funds were reportedly distributed during Ramadan tafseer sessions across different Islamic groups, in his Dampar and Sarkin Kudu. However, critics argue that the gesture did not reflect the diversity of the constituency, alleging that other areas were left out.

 

These developments have reinforced a growing perception among some constituents that the benefits of representation are tilted towards certain areas, particularly Dampar, the lawmaker's home community. While supporters deny the allegations, the narrative continues to gain ground.

 

A political analyst warned that such perceptions could have electoral consequences if not addressed.

 

"There is an unwritten expectation of balance in Wukari/Ibi politics. Once people begin to feel left out, it quickly affects voting decisions," the analyst said.

 

Another stakeholder also questioned the lawmaker's performance at the National Assembly.

 

"If you compare him with the former lawmaker, the difference is clear. How many motions has he raised? What bill has he sponsored that can transform the constituency?" the source asked.

 

Comparisons with neighbouring constituencies like Bali/Gassol, where residents point to more visible projects, have further increased pressure on the lawmaker.

 

Despite the growing criticism, Zaku is still seen as having an advantage within the APC and may secure the party's ticket. However, analysts say winning the general election will depend largely on public perception and grassroots support.

 

"The party must present a candidate that can win. Right now, the tides are not in his favour," another analyst warned.

 

With the 2027 election approaching, observers say Hon. Ayuba Zaku will need to improve engagement, ensure fair distribution of projects, and rebuild trust across the constituency to strengthen his chances of re-election.
