Tamnya Youths on Mambilla Plateau Decry Neglect, Seek Jobs in Cameroon

 

Youths from Tamnya and other border communities on the Mambilla Plateau have decried what they described as prolonged neglect and lack of employment opportunities, a situation they say has forced many of them to seek means of livelihood in neighbouring Cameroon.

 

The concern was raised by the Tamnya Cultural Development Association during its end-of-year meeting held on December 26, 2025, in Tamnya. Speaking at the event, the association's president, Dr Sanusi Bako, called on the federal and Taraba State governments to urgently address youth unemployment in Tamnya and other border towns on the plateau.

 

Dr Bako said the absence of sustainable job opportunities on the Nigerian side of the border had over the years pushed many youths out of school and into menial jobs in Cameroon in search of greener pastures.

 

"For years, our youths have abandoned school because there are no jobs to look forward to here. Many of them cross into Cameroon to face harsh realities of life," he said.

 

He, however, urged the youths not to lose hope, noting that efforts were being made by the present administration under Governor Agbu Kefas to improve living conditions across the state. He said the state government's free education policy had given every child the right to education and encouraged parents and youths to take full advantage of the programme to secure a better future.

 

Dr Bako also urged the youths to remain law-abiding and loyal to constituted authorities, stressing that development could only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and cooperation.

 

He used the occasion to call on the federal government to establish an international market in Tamnya, saying such a facility would boost cross-border trade and strengthen the long-standing economic and social ties between communities on both sides of the Nigeria–Cameroon border.

 

The event also featured the presentation of awards to prominent sons and daughters of the area in recognition of their contributions to community development. Among those honoured was the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Barrister G.T. Kataps, who was commended for facilitating a multi-million naira water project in Tamnya.

 

Others honoured included Rt. Hon. Peter Abel Diah, member representing Mbamnga Constituency, for contributions to infrastructure development, school renovation, water projects, road construction, healthcare delivery, as well as women and youth empowerment. Rev. Eric Juyoh was also honouredfor his role in human capital development and philanthropy.

 

Also recognised were the Head of Service of Taraba State, Dr Ahmed Hamidu Kara, described as a committed team player with visible grassroots impact, and Barrister Umar Bangari, Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, who received a trailblazer award for his role in securing the construction of the road linking Three Corner Bang, Tamnya, Hainareand Dorofi.

 

Cultural dances and performances added colour to the event, which attracted community leaders, youths and invited guests from across the MambillaPlateau.
