Federal lawmakers ask army to intervene in Tiv/Jukun crisis




The House of Representatives has asked the Nigerian Army to increase its presence in parts of Taraba state engulfed in communal clashes.
It has also called on security agencies to fish out and prosecute the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
What started as a disagreement between a Tiv man from Benue and a Jukun from Taraba state early this year, has resulted in killings and wide scale destruction of properties in Wukari area of Taraba state.
Danjuma Shiddi from Taraba state and Udende Emmanuel from Benue state co-sponsored a motion on the need for urgent security intervention in the crisis rocking the boundary areas between the two states.
They worry that several settlements in nine wards have been sacked. More than ten thousand people have also been displaced
Contributors are concerned that in some places, security agencies were overwhelmed and could not contain the killing of innocent people
The House resolved to probe the underlying causes of the crisis and proffer lasting solution.
Benue and Taraba state governments have also been tasked to intensify peace efforts in the area, while NEMA and the Presidential committee on North East have been urged to provide relief materials to the displaced persons.
