The Taraba North Progressives (TNP) has welcomed Senator Shuaibu Isa Lau’s intervention on the recent killings in Binnari community, Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, describing his decision to raise the incident at the Senate as a positive response to its earlier demand for urgent action.

In a statement signed by its representative, Tanko Kirim, the group said the senator’s intervention indicated that he was beginning to respond to the concerns of his constituents, although it maintained that the action came later than expected.

TNP recalled that it had previously urged Lau to raise the Binnari killings on the floor of the Senate and press for urgent federal intervention to address the security challenges confronting the affected community.

“This is a wake-up call for our senator, and we are glad to see him responding. While we believe this action came later than it should have, we welcome it because speaking on the floor of the Senate about the suffering of his constituents is a step in the right direction,” the group said.

However, the group stressed that raising the matter at the Senate should not mark the end of the senator’s response to the tragedy.

It urged Lau to visit Binnari, meet with bereaved families and community leaders, and engage directly with residents affected by the attack to assess the extent of the damage and demonstrate solidarity with the victims.

According to TNP, the affected families need more than statements of sympathy, insisting that they require practical support, sustained engagement and concrete measures to improve security and prevent further attacks.

The group also called on the senator to follow up with relevant authorities to ensure that demands for humanitarian assistance and improved security along vulnerable routes and border communities translate into tangible results.

While acknowledging Lau’s intervention, TNP said it remained interested in an account of his performance during his three years in office, arguing that constituents deserved information about the projects he had facilitated, initiatives he had supported and measurable outcomes of his representation.

“We welcome this development and acknowledge the senator’s decision to speak on the Binnari tragedy at the Senate. We want him to sustain this level of engagement and go further by visiting the affected community. We are also strongly interested in knowing what he has achieved for the people of Taraba North during the last three years,” the statement added.

TNP said its position was informed by the need for responsive representation, accountability and the protection of lives and property across Taraba North Senatorial District.

The group expressed solidarity with the people of Binnari and called on relevant authorities to provide necessary humanitarian assistance to affected families while strengthening security measures to prevent a recurrence of the attacks.
