Senator Jimkuta Marginalizing Persons with Disabilities In Southern Zone- Blind Association

The Nigeria Association of the Blind, Taraba State Chapter, has accused the Senator representing Taraba South, David Su Jimkuta, of neglecting persons with disabilities (PWDs) in his constituency projects and empowerment initiatives.

In an open letter signed by the state chairman, Comrade Wanderimam Teyang, and made available to journalists, the association expressed dismay over what it described as "the high rate of discrimination and marginalization" in the senator's programmes over the past two years.

According to the group, Senator Jimkuta's interventions – including empowerment schemes, distribution of cars and motorcycles, fertilizer support, and employment opportunities – have consistently excluded PWDs.

"We commend your efforts in empowering various groups and individuals in our constituency, but we cannot help but feel left out and neglected," the letter stated. "This omission is a clear manifestation of discrimination and marginalization, which we find disheartening."

The association lamented that repeated attempts to reach the lawmaker through letters, phone calls, and text messages had been ignored. It reminded the senator that PWDs also participated in the 2023 senatorial election and therefore deserved fair representation.

The group called on the senator to design programs that specifically address their needs, including empowerment packages, scholarships, accessible employment opportunities, and disability-friendly infrastructure.

They also urged him to make all future initiatives inclusive by consulting with disability organizations, ensuring accessibility in communication, and creating platforms where PWDs can contribute to decision-making.

"We believe that as a good senator who has supported other groups, you will hear our cry and respond to our requests," the letter concluded.

As of press time, Senator Jimkuta had not publicly responded to the concerns raised by the association.
