Gov Kefas Not Dumping PDP For APC— Party Spokesman

The spokesperson of the Taraba State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Andetarang Iranmae, has denied claims that Governor Agbu Kefas is planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as some of his counterparts have done.

There has been speculation among some Nigerians that Taraba may be among the states likely to align with the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In an exclusive chat with Taraba Truth and Facts, Iranmae dismissed the rumour, stating that Governor Kefas has never disclosed any intention of defecting to the party.

He described the speculation as part of a broader conspiracy to weaken the PDP by the ruling party.

"What is happening within the PDP is quite bad, in my view, because democracy is a game of intrigues. Some people believe pulling others down will give them a leg up. They are simply afraid of the PDP. Their biggest plan is to bring the party down to avoid a competitive contest," he said.

Iranmae added that despite the challenges currently facing the PDP, the party has strong leaders working to rebuild and strengthen its base.

 "Yes, there are visible challenges confronting the PDP right now, but we have leaders consciously working to mend fences and restore the party's strength. All attempts to stifle the opposition won't work because Nigeria is a complex country. You can't take the people's resilience for granted."

On Governor Kefas' alleged defection plans, he said:

 "Let me make it clear: Governor Agbu Kefas has never mentioned any plan to defect. He remains committed to the party. If such a thing were ever to arise, we'll deal with it when the time comes."

Iranmae also highlighted the party's resilience, noting that Taraba State remains the only PDP-controlled state in Northern Nigeria since 1999.

He said that public criticism of Governor Kefas was normal in any functioning democracy.

 "If you govern without any feedback from the people, it means you're not working. Criticism means people are watching and involved. The governor is a listening leader who takes advice. We appreciate those who point out areas of concern — it's a sign of genuine interest."

He  reaffirms PDP's commitment to Taraba State:

 "We are proud to be the only PDP state in Northern Nigeria since 1999, and we are prayerfully working to ensure Taraba remains in the PDP fold."
