Education Commissioner Visits Namnai School After WAEC Exam Hall Collapse

The Taraba State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin, has visited Government Day Secondary School, Namnai in Gassol Local Government Area following the tragic incident that occurred on May 28, 2025, during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). 

The Commissioner was received by the school's principal, Mrs. Watsi Danjuma, alongside Mr. Sarga Ugba Godwin from the AIE Zonal Office, and Mr. Yakubu Dikko, Principal of GDSS Mutum Biyu and Initiating Principal for Gassol Zone. 

The school principal briefed Dr. Augustina on the extent of the damage caused by the windstorm, which led to the collapse of a block of classrooms while students were writing their examination. Several students and teachers sustained injuries, but no lives were lost.

Dr. Augustina expressed deep sympathy on behalf of the Taraba State Government to the affected students, teachers, and the Namnai community. She commended the swift response of community members in rescuing and safeguarding the lives of those inside the building.

She also conveyed the prayers and concern of the education-friendly Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, who has reiterated his administration's commitment to protecting lives and property, especially within the school system.

Dr. Augustina thanked the village head for his continuous support to the school and called for ongoing collaboration among school leaders, teachers, and stakeholders in rebuilding and improving the learning environment.

According to eyewitnesses, the building collapsed shortly after a heavy rainfall began. The structure was reportedly in a dilapidated condition, raising concerns about infrastructure safety in public schools.
