Waste Commissioner Flags-Off Evacuation Of Dumpsites

Taraba State government says a plan to create an efficient waste collection and evacuation system is underway.

The State Commissioner for Waste Management and Resource Innovation, Hon. Bernard James disclosed this during an assessment tour of dumpsites within Jalingo, the State capital.

He said that the assessment tour was to determine the next line of action of the ministry to ensure environmental hygiene as well as create wealth out of waste.

According to Mr. Bernard James, the ministry aims to promote responsible waste management practices in line with the vision of Governor Agbu Kefas for a cleaner Taraba.

He explained that the tour was also aimed at seeing things for himself and looking forward to how to convert waste into wealth.

The Commissioner further revealed that the state government is working actively with relevant authorities to approve a day for general sanitation, at least once a month.

He called on the people of the state to ensure that they dispose of their waste at the only government-approved and demarcated dumpsites because of the health, and environmental dangers as well as challenges that are attached to improper waste disposal.

Hon. Bernard James, however, appealed to the people of the state to welcome the initiative of his ministry and commit to start using government-approved dumpsites, as well as support the government in ensuring that the state is clean at all times.

While fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the exercise, Engr. Godfrey Andrew, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry said being the ministry is new, they are putting in place measures to recycle solid waste to wealth, as well as create awareness among the people on its impact.

To put structures in place, Andrew revealed that the ministry has written a memorandum with the view to create four Agencies under it, which will serve as the sanitation Agency, the Conversion of waste to wealth, and the Law enforcement Agency, while he commended the foresight of Governor Agbu Kefas for establishing the ministry
