The army officer and his family, who were abducted by unidentified gunmen along Wukari Ibbi road in Ibbi local government area of Taraba State on Saturday, have regained their freedom after soldiers issued a 24-hour ultimatum to communities where the officer was abducted.
Sources in Wukari and Ibbi told journalists that the abducted Army officer and his family were released Sunday night after soldiers and police had stormed Ibiwa village where the gunmen abducted the army officer in a rescue operation.
The soldiers, the source added, had issued a 24-hour ultimatum to communities in the location to release the officer and his family.
The chairman of Ibbi local government area and the paramount ruler of Ibbi also joined the rescue mission, according to sources.
Kidnappers have abducted the army officer attached to Takum Army Barracks, his wife and two children along Wukari-Ibbi road, the officer, who was not in uniform, was traveling in his personal car with his family when they were abducted by the gunmen at Ibiwa village in Ibbi LGA of the state.
Meanwhile two wives of permanent secretary in Taraba state deputy governor’s office AlhajiBabaji Dadinkowa abducted last week has been freed after a ten million ransom was paid, Taraba Truth and Facts learnt.
Most businessmen and top civil servants are already relocating their family out of the state capital, while rural dwellers are trooping to Jalingo as kidnappers ransacks from village to village in the hinterlands.
In Gashaka last week two women were kidnapped two women were kidnapped and later freed after ransom was paid.
A respondent told Taraba Truth and Facts that they were forced to pay 23,000 to free their uncle who was kidnapped on his farmland in one of the villages in Ibi.
The respondent said many villages in Southern Taraba have been abandoned due to kidnapping of poor farmers.
“when the kidnap you in your farm you are forced to call your relative to send money, sometimes as low as 10,000. These kidnap gang will collect from you to regain your freedom. Many cases of kidnapping are not getting to the public.”
in an article titled: The Untold Story About Kidnapping in Southern Taraba, Idris Ayuba lamented that kidnappers will visit a particular community uninterrupted for the period of 3-4 days picking the well to do men and women.
He said that kidnappers goes to village markets to pick traders who go to village to village markets to buy farm produce of the village dwellers
“The most painful aspect of part is that, what mostly transpired between those traders and farmers in these local communities is tantamount to Trade by barter .This is because only when those traders go to purchase their goods they can have money to buy ingredients for soup, soap , clothing and medicine.
Do you know that even farmers in their farm lands are no longer safe? They meet you in the farm pick you up and demand for as low as five ten and twenty thousand and above?
Now, business men who usually come from far and near to purchase what we produce no longer come because the security of their lives and capital is not guarantee. The retailers in our local communities are leaving because we can't protect them.”
