Novelty Football Match Kicks Off Anti-Drug Campaign in Jalingo

A novelty football match aimed at combating drug abuse and promoting sustainable development was held on Sunday, February 1, 2026, in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

The event, organised by development economist, Dr. Daniel Buba, was held under the theme "Red Card Against Drugs", and harnessed the unifying power of sports to advance advocacy against drug abuse while supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those relating to good health and well-being, youth empowerment and social inclusion.

Branded with the message "Kick a Goal Against Drug Abuse," the match attracted youths from different parts of the Jalingo metropolis, providing a platform for engagement, awareness creation and positive social interaction. The initiative underscored the importance of encouraging young people to channel their energy into productive ventures such as sports, rather than drug abuse and other social vices.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Buba described drug abuse as a growing threat to youth productivity and sustainable development, stressing that community-driven interventions are essential to tackling the challenge.

"Drug abuse undermines the future of our youths and the development of our society. Sports offer a powerful platform for promoting discipline, teamwork and healthy lifestyles, which are critical in steering young people away from drugs," he said.

Participants and spectators commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful, and called for increased youth-focused programmes that combine advocacy with recreation.

The "Red Card Against Drugs" campaign is expected to continue through similar activities aimed at promoting a drug-free society and empowering youths across Taraba State.
