Taraba Relocates People Living Along River Benue

 

The Taraba State Government has heeded to the Federal Government warning of an impending flood in the state by relocating persons living along flood plain areas along the River Benue and giving them livelihood incentives.

 

The State Commissioner for Special Duties, SaviourNoku, who spoke with our reporter, revealed that those living along the river banks were rice farmers and have been relocated and encouraged to practice dry season farming.

 

He said just like last year, the government is being proactive about the situation.

 

He stated: "already. as at last week, there was this sensitization. SEMA were going round with NEMA for advocacy and sensitization. We have put in necessary machineries in place.

 

"In the case of last year, you didn't hear of any case in Taraba because of the pro-activeness of the Ministry with the advice of the governor.

 

"You know when we put up a proposal to buy food items and so on in anticipation of the impending flood, he looked at us and asked, "what is the difference between you and people selling casket in the market?" (Because you are expecting flood so that you would give people food).

 

"What he wants is that people living around the riverine areas should be relocated to safer places as well as encourage dry season farming for those living in flood prone areas.

 

"Last year we were able to provide farm implements for people who are into rice farming. We have been able to relocate those living along the River Benue trough"..

 

According to him, government was "on top" of the situation by visiting flash points such as Lau, Mayo Renawo, Karim, Ibi, Wukari and Donga.
